Brexit
People are fed up with the Brexit chaos.
It was the number one issue raised in responses to my recent survey in the constituency, yet we have been represented by an MP who promotes the hardest of Brexits and came up with the idea of the illegal prorogation of Parliament to shut down debate and force a No Deal exit.
Brexit undermines every part of our economy, threatens public services, including the NHS, and limits opportunities for our children and grandchildren. It is already causing damage. The Institute for Fiscal Studies estimates that it is costing us more than £1 billion a week; many EU nationals have already left our NHS, leaving it further under pressure and under-staffed.
It is not true that passing the withdrawal agreement means that we will have “got Brexit done”. It will be the start of years of negotiations on trade deals, efforts to restore our economic growth and the rebuilding of our reputation on the international stage.
I want to stop Brexit and give the people the democratic final say. We’ve always called for a People’s Vote and will continue to do so. If there is a General Election before a People’s Vote, then we’re offering voters a real way to stop Brexit by electing a Liberal Democrat majority government, which will revoke Article 50. A Liberal Democrat majority means we will have achieved a democratic mandate to Stop Brexit.
But, if we don’t stop Brexit, we won’t be able to grow our economy, tackle the climate emergency, and address the crises in our NHS and schools, all of which are my priorities here in Esher and Walton.
